Tosia Bargiełowska Johnsen

Aloha! My name is Tosia and I study MFA Contemporary Art Practice at the Edinburgh College of Art. I am especially interested in conceptual, performative and experimental work, which reflects my background in philosophy, social anthropology and dance. When it comes to my inspirations, I greatly admire Friedrich Nietzsche, Isadora Duncan, Frida Kahlo and James Turrell.

Outside my studies, I organise various events as part of Artesfera - an open arts collective aimed at bringing together creative people of Edinburgh - which I co-founded in 2016. Our most recent collaboration involved helping curate and facilitate the ‘Exchange: Art Party’ at the Fruitmarket Gallery. We are constantly looking for new exciting projects, so feel free to get in touch if you would like to get on board! :)

On top of that, I am a Zumba Fitness instructor at the Edinburgh University gym in Pleasance. One of the coolest and toughest experiences of my life was teaching dance in the biggest favela in Latin America - Rocinha, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - which made me convinced that working with dance and people is what makes me a fulfilled human being.

I am truly delighted to join the Imaginate team as a Young Associate for the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival! To know the ins and outs of art festivals has always been my dream, so I am really looking forward to getting started!
