My name is Hannah. I am dance artist who makes performances with and for young people.

I did both my undergraduate training and Masters at Laban, London. Gaining a 1st Class BA (Hons) in Dance Theatre in 2007 and an MA in Dance Performance as company member of Transitions Dance Company in 2008. From 2008-11 I worked as a freelance dancer based in London.

Most of my career I have worked as a performer and I am particularly inspired when collaborating with artists from different disciplines namely music, film and design. Some artists I have had the pleasure to work with include; Maria Jerez, Caitlin Mulgrew, Valerie Reid, Christine Devaney, Ian Spink, Miguel Pereira, Rosemary Butcher and Valerie Preston-Dunlop.

In 2012 I went to Espacio LEM in Buenos Aires, Argentina with the aim to develop my choreographic practice. This was a pivotal moment for me in transitioning into starting to make my own work. As a choreographer I draw upon my experience and interest in collaborating across different art forms and hope to make works that engages, includes and inspires audiences of all ages. Creating work for theatres, as well as outside in places and spaces where you might not expect to find dance.  After 3 months training at LEM, I returned back to my home town of Edinburgh where I am currently based.

I am passionate about teaching and have taught dance to all ages and abilities on various projects. I am particularly interested in working with young people, with a focus on working within vulnerable communities. Some companies, institutions and charities I have worked with for include; Lyra Theatre’s Young Company Scottish Ensemble, Dance Base, North Edinburgh Arts, Chisenhale Dance Space, Creative Identities, Edinburgh International Festival (Deborah Colker & LA Dance Project), The Haven Project, Transitions Dance Company, Laban and many schools and colleges across the UK and Europe.

Working with Imaginate

I was delighted to have the opportunity to be Artist in Residence with Imaginate 2014-15. During my residency I created and performed Trio an abstract dance piece which explored themes of identity, belonging and power dynamics, devised in collaboration with two young performers. Trio was performed as part of Imaginate Delegate Programme 2015 and at Platform in Easterhouse. My residency with Imaginate has been key to the development of my choreographic practice. Having the time and space to delve deeper into my practice was a huge privilege. The support, encouragement and opportunities gained from my residency with Imaginate have been invaluable.

Since finishing my residency I have been busy working on two Starcatchers productions;

As Artist Facilitator on Blue Block Studio by Katy Wilson; an interactive play space for babies under 24 months and their adults which toured Scotland and was part of Imaginate Festival 2016.

Also as performer in Hup, created by Hazel Darwin-Edwards and Abigail Sinar. Hup is a music and theatre experience for 0-24 month olds and their adults and in 2016 Hup toured to Canada, Hong Kong, Macau and Edinburgh Festival as part of Made in Scotland Showcase.

In 2016 I also co-started the company TIN CRATE with the brilliant Caitlin Mulgrew. TIN CRATE is passionate about inclusivity and believe that creating movement and music is for everybody. We believe in working collaboratively with young people, creating work in an open and relaxed environment with the freedom to experiment, explore and take risks. Working towards creating public performances and platforms for young people to exceed both their own, and other people’s expectations. TIN CRATE offers contemporary music and dance workshops to young people across Edinburgh and beyond.

Currently, I am excited to be working with Barrowland Ballet on there new production Wolves. I am co-leading their Intergenerational Company alongside Artistic Director Natasha Gilmore and am performing with the company and community casts in Wolves, premiering Spring 2017.
