It is quite clear that there isn't enough deaf representation, not enough opportunities or funding to create or write stories and develop them into shows. I don't just want to be seen as a box to be ticked. I want to be seen or heard as Craig McCulloch, an actor or theatre maker creating groundbreaking original work. I hope to break that barrier and build a bridge between deaf and hearing artists, and work together.

Craig McCulloch graduated from RCS in 2018, as part of the first cohort in the BA performance in BSL and English. He is an actor, theatre maker, workshop facilitator and translator.

His ambition is to create visual work for both deaf and hearing audiences so they are able to enjoy a story by sharing an universal language - visual. His first step in creating visual work was with Connor Bryson on a show called Blackout, a visual and physical comedy as part of his RCS studies. The show was later performed at the Manipulate Festival in Edinburgh 2020.

"I love watching visual theatre with no spoken words or signs in it because this is easy for me to access and I love seeing small details, visual elements in any visual storytelling piece. Every time I see a fully visual show, I always feel pulled into their world as if im in it and seeing everything come alive, my imagination goes wild, that’s what I love about it and that’s my passion."

His inspiration for visual works came through his mentor Ramesh Meyyappan, a well known visual theatre performer, theatre maker, who taught him at RCS.
