Gretchen Maynard-Hahn is a puppet, prop, and costume designer and maker whose practice blends finely honed craft with bold, imaginative storytelling. With a career spanning large-scale stage productions to experimental independent work, Gretchen brings deep expertise in analogue techniques, character construction, and material innovation—especially within sustainable making.
She has led puppet departments on landmark productions including War Horse and My Neighbour Totoro, served as Deputy Head of Puppets on The Lion King, and worked as a puppet technician on Life of Pi. Her recent credits include work for Tenterhooks, National Theatre of Scotland, Northern Stage and she was a contributing writer for the Society of British Theatre Designers' Sustainable Materials Handbook, advocating for sustainable approaches in live performance design.
