Imaginate is lead partner of PUSH+ (a 3-year Creative Europe co-operation project) working alongside partners in Belgium, Ireland, Norway, Denmark and Thailand to ‘push’ and develop thinking, ideas and the artforms within theatre and dance for children and young people in Europe.  You can read more about PUSH+ here.

We are delighted to announce the first PUSH+ Lab is now open for applications for artists based in Scotland. This will be an 8-day residential laboratory that will focus on the topic of Home hosted by Imaginate. It will take place from 23 January - 1 February 2019.  There are 3 places for artists in Scotland who will join 3 artists each from Belgium, Ireland, Denmark and Norway.

The Lab will focus around theme of home and will explore some of the following questions:

  • Does home have a different meaning for children?  How are we impacting on children by portraying home in theatre and dance as a place of cosiness and safety where this is not their experience of life?
  • How does our experience of place create identity and belonging, both of which are essential to an understanding of home?
  • How much is a sense of home connected to ‘physical' space or place and notions of permanence. What is it to live in the middle spaces where sometimes nowhere feels fully like home?
  • Is wherever I lay my hat, my home? privilege, assumption, exclusion?
  • How does our relationship to our environment - built and natural - affect and inform our sense of self, place and home?
  • How do experiences of migration inform the place-making that is involved in making a home?
  • Do we really know who lives in our cities as immigration itself diversifies, with immigrants from new countries moving in, resulting in an increasing and/or changing range of nationalities?
  • Do elements of our home affect the art we make – landscape, language, culture, bodily expressions, rituals, communal storytelling, history?

The selection panel for this call out is Fiona Ferguson (Creative Development Director, Imaginate/PUSH+ Steering Group), Pamela Walker (Producer, Imaginate/PUSH+ Steering Group), Luke Pell (Freelance artist/Home Lab Artist Facilitator) and Mamoru Iriguchi (Freelance artist/PUSH Gender Lab).  Artists will hear by Friday 16 November 2018 if they have been selected or not.

Each PUSH+ partner has an identical application process but with their own selection panel and deadlines. If you are an artist based in Scotland you should apply through us at Imaginate using the information on this page. For call out information for artists based in Ireland, Belgium, Denmark and Norway visit our temporary PUSH+ project page.
