Scratch That! is back again, and Imaginate is partnering with Tramway to present an evening of high quality, exciting and diverse new early-stage dance and theatre pieces for children and young people on the 17 February 2022. Scratch That! is an excellent opportunity for artists based in Scotland to try out ideas and to receive feedback from peers and sector colleagues. The performances should be an open exploration of your idea with no expectations of a polished performance, and up to 8 minutes long, max.

The scratch performances will take place in Tramway’s main performance space, Tramway 1, and will present alongside an installation from our current Launchpad artist Ruby Hirsch.

You can apply as a solo artist, or with up to 4 creatives attached to the project. However, if your idea falls outside of these parameters (e.g. number of artists, budget for materials etc.) please get in touch with Creative Development Director, Fiona Ferguson, for a conversation pre-application.

What we can offer

  • £160 per artist for the tech and performance day on the 17 February
  • £160 per artist for one prep/rehearsal day
  • Rehearsal space for one day in Glasgow or Edinburgh, or local to you wherever possible
  • Travel expenses within Scotland to attend the performance
  • Up to £50 for materials

In line with our Climate Emergency Statement of Intent we encourage all artists to consider the materials they use and how they use them. Please get in touch with us for advice and support in sourcing or borrowing second-hand props and materials.

If you are a d/Deaf and/or disabled artist or company, and would like to incorporate a BSL interpreter into your performance, we have additional budgets to support this. We also have a budget to cover access costs for the performance and rehearsal.

Technical Information

You will have 90 minutes to rehearse and tech your scratch on the morning of 17 February. As this is a scratch night, your tech requirements should be minimal. We can provide the following:

  • LX: A warm wash, a cool wash and a couple of spots
  • SFX: A PA
  • AV: A projector and a standard screen

Application Panel

A panel of Imaginate staff and a freelance artist will talk through each application thinking about these key criteria:

  • Are people excited and intrigued by the idea?
  • Is the idea inclusive for the audience of children and families?
  • Is the idea, artist(s) or theme under-represented in performance for young audiences?

The panel will include:

  • Mamoru Iriguchi, Freelance Artist
  • Fiona Ferguson, Creative Development Director, Imaginate
  • Fi Fraser, Production Manager, Imaginate
  • Isy Sharman, Assistant Producer, Imaginate
