I listen to lots of audio drama and I love how you are free to create stories without any of the restrictions of stage or screen; if you want to create a mystery that happens ten billion years ago, on the moon, then you can! Children’s imaginations are amazing places and I wanted them to be able to spend lots of time roaming about in their own creative worlds and then to have a satisfying, shareable outcome at the end.

Lead Artist: Xana Marwick
Trainee Artist: Marie-Gabrielle Koumenda

Over 10 weeks in the Spring, Xana Marwick and Marie-Gabrielle Koumenda worked together with Primary 7 and Primary 5 classes at Brunstane Primary School in Portobello in Edinburgh.

The Brunstane Mysteries

During their Immerse Residency Xana and Marie-Gabrielle collaborated with pupils to create their very own podcast, The Brunstane Mysteries!

Listen to the podcast on Spotify here.

Working with the participants' own ideas and inspirations, they created a programme of brand-new audio stories, all with mysteries at their hearts…

The artists supported the classes to become production and creative teams, with children taking on the roles that interested them the most in this process, be that writer, storyteller, actor, researcher, musician, producer or something else.

The content, themes and stories all came from the interests of the participants themselves, sometimes inspired by games, books, tv, film, music, the outdoors, the indoors… but ultimately it came from their own imaginations.

These are some of the things the pupils said they'd learnt from taking part in the project:

  • Acting how to marry someone
  • How to do a ‘Mwhahahahaha’ evil laugh
  • How to acta and make podcasts
  • Being confident and talking in front of a microphone that is going public
  • How to play music with ‘things’ like buckets, pencils or a plastic bag.
