Where We Are

c. Safe Heaven group as part of My City project in 2018

Where We Are is a new creative initiative by Starcatchers, Imaginate and Lyra, encompassing a travelling ensemble, creative play, and participatory performance making, all co-designed with children and young people across Edinburgh, Glasgow and Fife.

Supported by the Creative Scotland Youth Arts Targeted Fund, Where We Are will recruit up to 17 artists, practitioners, and production staff to engage over 6 months with refugee families, groups of children, and young mothers and babies through a programme of inspirational artistic activity.  In partnership with organisations focused on tackling inequality, incl. Refuweegee, Multicultural Family Base and Fife Gingerbread, the three distinct project strands will be informed by the wellbeing and needs of the children and young people involved.

The project partners will deliver a comprehensive training and development programme for the artistic team including anti-racism and trauma-informed child protection training, with opportunities to share artistic practices and project learning. We aim to create a supportive and shared experience across the whole project.

Where We Are is all about connecting with children and young people through performance making, creative arts and play as we begin to look towards life beyond the pandemic.

Where We Are (Imaginate) is the project strand led by Imaginate and will involve two residencies creating participatory performances with children, one in Edinburgh in partnership with Multi Cultural Family Base and a second in Glasgow in partnership with Refuweegee.  The residencies will run from June to December 2021.

Each residency will have a Lead Artist in Residence and Trainee Artist in Residence who will collaborate with the children to create a performance that reflects their ideas and interests around place and where we are.  In Edinburgh the artists will work with children who take part in the Safe Haven Project group at MCFB.

Where We Are (Imaginate) Partners

Multi-cultural Family Base (MCFB) is a voluntary organisation providing a range of services including emotional and practical support to vulnerable children, young people and their families. We work to support children and parents dealing with important transition points- this can be the birth of  a child, the move into primary school or the move to Edinburgh.  We help children and families deal with issues of identity, loss, displacement and trauma. Many of our families are from Black, Minority Ethnic (BME) communities and can be new migrants to Edinburgh or refugees

Refuweegee is a community-led charity that gives people a way to welcome and embrace those newest to arrive. We strive to ensure that people who have been forced to flee their homes arrive in Scotland to a warm welcome and some of the things that will help people to feel more at home here.
