Explore - In School

New Boy by Zanzibar Films
New Boy by Zanzibar Films
When you meet Imaginate for the first time, you hear these wonderful stories of what’s happening in different schools, and then you see it in your own school. A really reluctant writer, who just really became involved in not just this, but all curriculum areas. She kind of found a wee love of learning and discovered what she could do with just a little bit of self-belief.

—Primary Teacher about A Small Tale

The Explore - In School programme enables pupils to experience a broad range of live, digital and interactive theatre and dance, all in their own environment. We will work with teachers at each stage to ensure that each school’s needs are being met.

Open to all local authority primary schools in Scotland. All enquiries to Julian Almeida - tiss@imaginate.org.uk - 0131 225 8050

The In School programme includes:
* A Theatre in Schools Scotland production
* Access to the Edinburgh International Children’s Festival digital programme
* Interactive project - A Small Tale by Punchdrunk Enrichment

Theatre in Schools Scotland

TISS creates opportunities for schools to host live performances for their pupils with a year-round programme of world-class productions created by Scottish performing companies. The shows are designed especially for school halls and can tour anywhere in Scotland.

  • Maya and the Whale (P6 – S2) is the story of a young climate activist on the run, grappling for hope amid unfolding global disasters, when she finds a beached, dying whale.
    Feb-March 2023.
    Max 2 performances/day. Capacity: 125 pupils.

Edinburgh International Children’s Festival - Digital

The Children's Festival presents the world’s best theatre and dance for young audiences, reflecting many different artforms, cultures, and ways of interpreting the world.

This year the Festival will once again present a beautiful film programme of 6 films, each exploring the nature of what it is to be human, the things that separate us and the connections that bring us all together. Class resources will be available for each film.

Edinburgh International Children’s Festival: 27 May – 4 June 2023
Programme release: 12 January 2023

Interactive project: A Small Tale by Punchdrunk Enrichment

A teacher-led interactive project for two classes. Punchdrunk Enrichment projects celebrate the role of the teacher in the classroom: giving the tools and training to transform their school into a place of magic.

In A Small Tale, the teacher and their class read an old picture book about two tiny characters (Abe and Alba) who disappear from the book the following day leaving the pages blank, except for tiny footprints… The pupils are then asked to help find them through writing tasks.

Each school will receive online training from Punchdrunk Enrichment as well as a box of props to help teachers recreate the magic in their school.

Support for teachers

  • Clear ‘What to expect’ information for teachers prior to each performance to allow consideration of any children who may need more support
  • Support and classroom resources to explore the themes and assist planning for classroom activities.
  • Extras: In previous years we have also been able to assist our Explore schools to link up to other opportunities offered from Scottish theatre and dance organisations. No promises but we will do what we can!

Cost

  • One TiSS production (two performances in one day) in Autumn 22 or Spring 23
  • One digital programme of six films from Edinburgh International Children’s Festival for up to 60 pupils
  • Punchdrunk Enrichment training for two staff and a box of props to be used with pupils

Total cost per year is £800 + VAT
Extra Theatre in Schools Scotland production can be arranged at a cost of £500 + VAT
Small schools with roll under 100 qualify for Small Schools Subsidy. Please get in touch to explore this option.

The project is subsidised by Imaginate and National Theatre of Scotland (thanks to funding from Scottish Government, Creative Scotland and City of Edinburgh Council).
