How to apply

You can apply in writing, in film or audio recording or in BSL. Your application will be read/watched/listened to by children from our partner school so please make sure your application is child-friendly and can be easily understood by an 8 year-old!

We ask that you include the following in your application:

  • Tell us a little about you/your company and/or the artists involved in your idea. Please include your/the artists' pronouns, if you are comfortable doing so.
  • Tell us about your performance idea. Give us a clear description of the piece you would like to present, what type/style of performance it is and how you would like the audience to experience/interact with it.
  • Tell us how you would like to co-create and collaborate with children in the making of the performance (our FAQs have more information on what we mean by co-creation and collaboration with children)

You should send your application to applications@imaginate.org.uk with Creative Encounters Commission 2023 as the subject title by Thursday 8 December 2022. Please do not send any CVs.

For more detailed information on the different ways you can apply please see our additional information and FAQs document.

Imaginate, in partnership with North Edinburgh Arts, is delighted to be working with children from North West Edinburgh to commission an artist(s)/company, based in Scotland, to make a brand new piece of theatre or dance for young audiences. This new commission will be presented locally in North West Edinburgh and at our Festival Family Encounters, which will take place in the National Museum of Scotland on Saturday 27 May 2023.

The new work will need to be suitable for a busy public space, for example: pop-up performances, walkabouts, or interactive pieces. Whatever your idea, it must involve a process of collaboration with children and young people in its development and/or execution.

This commission is part of Creative Encounters, a rights-based project which seeks to place children and young people at the centre of decision-making processes in the creation of new performances for young audiences. This commission is for year one of the project.

  • Watch the Guidelines and FAQs in BSL below. If you open the videos in YouTube, you will find a list of video timings in the description.
