I am hoping to develop my directing skills and see how working with a playwright for the first time, helps me as a director, theatre maker and writer.

Craig joined Imaginate as a Jerwood Fellow in May 2022 and has been exploring an idea he had to talk to children about dreams and nightmares through performance.  In November, he worked at The Tron for a week with a creative team to explore this idea:

Benedetta Zanetti - Performer
Bryn Jones - Stage Manager
Catherine King - Sign Language Interpreter
Craig McCulloch - Lead Artist
Karen Forbes - Sign Language Interpreter
Marcus Glover - Sign Language Interpreter
Petre Dobre - Performer
Shane O'Reilly - Dramaturg
Yvonne Strain - Sign Language Interpreter

Craig also saw performances for children at at Bibu Festival (Sweden) and Edinburgh International Children's Festival in May 2022.

"My idea with the Jerwood Fellowship is based on my experiences of dreams and nightmares during my childhood.  I have done a little bit of work previously on this piece with some funding from Deafinitely Theatre in London.

I drafted a rough script of my idea and had a day of Research and Development with two actors. We got together and discussed our experience with childhood dreams and nightmares. There were a lot of ideas thrown about and we got up on our feet and improvised some ideas linked to dreams and nightmares. I wanted this piece to be fully visual using many visual elements, but over the last year, I have realised the importance of BSL language and the fact that in Scotland, BSL is not seen much.

As a Jerwood Fellow, I would love to explore how to combine both visual and BSL elements in this piece. I hope to have another R&D with a team of actors and a playwright in the room, and explore this further to create a rough story and script.

My work is for deaf, hard of hearing and hearing audiences and I want everyone to be able to fully access and enjoy the piece."
