Imaginate is the national organisation which promotes, develops and celebrates theatre and dance for young people in Scotland. We want to excite and challenge children from all backgrounds and abilities with the best performances from across the world.
Our flagship festival is now called Edinburgh International Children’s Festival (formerly Imaginate Festival).
This change reflects the fact that Imaginate not only produces the Festival, but also has a wider remit as a year-round organisation supporting artists to make new and exciting work for young audiences. Imaginate's strategic role within the sector will thus be emphasised, while the Festival's new name will help build awareness amongst audiences who are not familiar with our work.
So, what's in a name?
Edinburgh - We are based in Edinburgh and contribute to the rich tapestry of arts and culture available throughtout the year. Our nine-day long celebration of theatre and dance for children offers over 90 performances in various venues across Edinburgh.
International - Our programme is truly international. Our Festival Director travels far and wide to select the most exciting and innovative performances available worlwide. This year, we will be presenting productions from 9 different countries including Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, Wales, the Netherlands, Norway and Australia. The Festival has also established itself as one of the best places for programmers from all over the world to see young people’s work of the very highest standard and each year, we welcome over 200 delegates from leading venues such as Sydney Opera House, Southbank Centre or the New Victory in Broadway.
Children - Our programme offers a rich and diverse mix of productions specifically created for children and young people. We want more children in Scotland to experience work that is deeply engaging, innovative and inspiring. We believe that all children deserve the opportunity to develop their creativity, emotional intelligence and reach their true potential.
Festival - We are part of a network of major festivals presenting work of the highest standard on a world stage. This year, we celebrate Edinburgh’s 70th anniversary as the world’s leading festival city - an unparalleled platform for cultural excellence and international exchange.
