Imaginate is lead partner of PUSH+ (a 3-year Creative Europe co-operation project) working alongside partners in Belgium, Ireland, Norway, Denmark and Thailand to ‘push’ and develop thinking, ideas and the artforms within theatre and dance for children and young people in Europe.

We are delighted to announce the second PUSH+ Lab is now open for applications for artists based in Scotland. This will be an 8-day, paid residential laboratory that will focus on the topic of Failure hosted by Krokusfestival in Hasselt, Belgium. It will take place from 13 - 22 September 2019 with 3 places for artists in Scotland who will join 3 artists each from Belgium, Ireland, Denmark and Norway.

The Lab will investigate how failure is related to success as a positive norm in society. What is failure compared to success, who decides on that, what does failure mean on a personal and social level? What if failure turns out to be as positive as success? Then we might need real Institutes of Failures as an antidote to our society imposed fear for failures. After all, Stephen Frears is (maybe) right: 'To be successful at anything, you need the right to fail, not just occasionally.'

The Lab will equally investigate how that applies to and effects children, parents and artists: how many failures are they allowed to make in the arts industry? And how do we, presenters and festival directors, deal with that? Do we keep supporting those failing artists or do we also turn our back in search of more successful productions? In that sense, this Lab will be partly a self-reflective dialogue (even and definitely between presenters and artists).

You can read about the previous Lab, exploring the topic of Home, here.

The selection panel for this call out will include Fiona Ferguson (Creative Development Director, Imaginate/PUSH+ Steering Group), Pamela Walker (Producer, Imaginate/PUSH+ Steering Group) and Anna Noonan (PUSH+ Home Lab artist). Artists will hear if they have been selected or not by Monday 17 June.

Each PUSH+ partner has an identical application process but with their own selection panel and deadlines. If you are an artist based in Scotland you should apply through us at Imaginate using the information on this page.  You can read about the call outs in Denmark, Ireland, Belgium and Norway here.

For general enquiries about this opportunity and the PUSH+ project, you can email us at push@imaginate.org.uk or contact Fiona Ferguson (Creative Development Director, Imaginate).
